Recreational Basketball League FAQs – 2026

 

  1. How are teams formed?
    Teams are formed based on the school that players attend, then by date and time to ensure fairness within our recreational league.  If a school’s team fills up or there are not enough players, they will be added to another team to ensure all can play.
  2. When and where do games take place?
    Games are held on Saturdays, with exact dates and times announced a few weeks before the season starts.  Our end of season tournament may be 2 days, Saturday and Sunday with single game elimination.  The season runs January 17 – March 1, 2026 with our annual tournament held on Feb. 28th & March 1, 2026.
  3. Do all teams have a coach?
    Yes, we ensure each team has a volunteer coach. We actively recruit parent volunteers and community volunteers so that every team is supported.
  4. Is basketball considered a contact sport?
    Basketball is considered a contact sport. While there is some physical contact, it’s not as heavy as in sports like football.
  5. What is the age range for players?
    Our league welcomes kids from grades 3 through 6. They are grouped by 3rd grade, 4th/5th combined, and 6th grade.
  6. How do I register my child for the league?
    You can request information online through our Boys & Girls Club website, BGCUV.org or visit our office during business hours.
  7. What equipment does my child need?
    Players should have athletic shoes, comfortable sportswear, and a water bottle. We’ll provide team jerseys.
  8. Are there practices in addition to games?
    Yes, each team will have two to three practices per week, scheduled by the coach.
  9. Is financial assistance available for registration fees?
    Absolutely. We offer a sliding scale with proof of income.
  10. How long is the basketball season?
    The season runs for 7 weeks, including our end of season tournament.
  11. Can parents attend the games?
    Yes! We encourage family and friends to come cheer on the teams.
  12. What if I want to volunteer as a coach or assistant?
    We’d love that! Just reach out to our office or indicate your interest during your child’s registration. 
  1. How long does the background check take for volunteer coaches?                   For first time volunteer coaches, the process can take up to 4 weeks.  Coaches may not hold practice until their background check is complete.
  1. What if I or someone I know wants to Referee?

We always need Referee’s!  Referees are essential to our program.  We accept referees ages 15+.  We ask that all referees have knowledge of the game, attend our mandatory training courses, meetings and pass our background check.  This is a paid position.
